After weeks of giving up their lunchtimes to practise, Team Hamstel arrived at Shoebury High School—on their day off—for the KS1 3 Tees cricket competition. Competing against eight other Southend schools, the team demonstrated outstanding determination, skill and sportsmanship throughout the day.
The first match saw Hamstel take on Thorpe Hall. With some fantastic batting, Hamstel set an impressive target of 58 runs. Thanks to sharp fielding, they held Thorpe Hall to just 50 runs and secured a confident opening win.
Next up was a tough match against a fresh Darlinghurst team. Despite a solid performance, Hamstel’s 44-run total was narrowly beaten by Darlinghurst, who edged ahead with 46 runs.
Determined to bounce back, Hamstel faced Our Lady of Lourdes in their final group match. They returned to winning form, posting 53 runs, and held their opponents to 48 with more excellent fielding and teamwork.
Finishing top of their group, Hamstel advanced to the semi-finals to play Greenways. The hot weather began to take its toll, and a few fielding errors allowed Greenways to post a formidable 63 runs. Hamstel fought hard in reply, scoring 52 runs in a valiant effort.
In the third-place play-off, they faced Thorpe Hall again. Despite having beaten them earlier in the day, a narrow margin and missed bonus points saw Hamstel just miss out, with a close 46–44 result.
Special mentions go to Josh, who achieved maximum bonus points in the first three matches, and to Imogyn, who displayed fantastic skill throughout. Ronnie had a moment of misfortune when he hit a six—only for the umpire to miss it, meaning he had to bat again! Every player gave it their all: Nylah, Josh, Luna, Arthur, Theo, Imogyn, Dahlia and Ronnie—well done!
A big thank you as well to all the parents and adults who supported and helped get the team to the competition on an INSET day. We’re incredibly proud of Team Hamstel!
