Across the school the skills of listening, attention, understanding and speaking are threaded through our whole school curriculum as we believe these are essential lifelong skills. We aim for children to be able to speak clearly, fluently and coherently, to be able to listen with understanding, pleasure and empathy and contribute to group discussions effectively.

We support children to achieve this by ensuring that all adults act as a model of speaking and listening in our day-to-day interactions with the children and with other adults. We encourage our children to talk in full sentences and help them to restructure their sentences when appropriate. We providing opportunities to speak in a range of situations including in groups, with adults, whole class, assemblies and year group and class performances.

We ensure the development of children’s vocabulary is through careful planning and by exposing all children to a range of high quality literature for both story time and learning stimuluses.
