At Hamstel Infant School and Nursery, we believe that teaching Religious Education will enable children to be equipped with knowledge and understanding of a range of different religions and worldviews. Our planning and teaching of RE gives children the confidence and opportunity to explore big questions about life and to find out what other people believe and the differences this makes to their lives. The Southend Agreed Syllabus for RE forms part of our planning in which it is divided into key areas:

Believing (Religious beliefs, teachings, sources; questions about meaning, purpose and truth)

Expressing (Religious and spiritual forms of expression; questions about identity and diversity)

Living (Religious practices and ways of living; questions about values and commitments)

We encourage the children’s developing ideas and the opportunity to reflect so they can begin to make sense of religion and different ways of living within our community and the wider world. All children are provided with opportunities and are encouraged to talk about themselves and their families, including special events that are meaningful to them as well. The RE curriculum will promote inquisitive minds, respect, tolerance and understanding for all those around them including themselves.

All children will join in and celebrate whole school events and celebrations such as Harvest, Remembrance Day, Christmas and Easter. As the children progress through KS1, the children will deepen their knowledge, skills and vocabulary.

RE is provided for all pupils, and is inclusive and broad minded. Parents do have the right to withdraw pupils from RE: if you wish to do this, make an appointment with the Head teacher. The school does not support selective withdrawal from RE’.
