Reception Curriculum

 

We strongly believe in ensuring that all of our children are surrounded by a rich, stimulating environment with a broad and balanced skill-based curriculum.  All our children are valued as individuals and we encourage each child to reach their full potential.  We encourage all children to be the best that they can be.  

 

Reception (Early Years Foundation Stage)

 

The children in our Reception classes follow the framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.  This is carried out through observations of structured play, conversations and child and adult initiated activities.  The children in Reception are taught within the seven areas of learning: 

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Communication and Language

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Arts and Design

  • Physical Development

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Mathematics

Here at Hamstel we approach early Mathematics in as practical a way as possible and children discover and deepen their Mathematical concepts through play, experimentation and the use of practical, concrete objects as the first approach. We understand the importance of developing the Mathematical vocabulary of our children in order for them to progress and aim to develop their understanding and use of this language through modelling, explanation and encouragement of the children to use and apply it. The school has adopted the Singapore approach for teaching and learning maths, where children learn through a progression of concrete, pictorial and abstract (formal recoding) methods, and we use the Maths-No Problem! scheme of work based on the model developed in Singapore.
